Can I switch health insurer in Spain without new waiting periods?

Yes: if you've had full-cover health insurance with another company in Spain for at least a year, Sanitas removes the waiting periods on your new policy, except childbirth and bariatric surgery, once you provide your policy schedule (or a card showing your start date) and proof of your latest premium payment.

The offer applies to policies held with another insurer in Spain. If you're on an international plan bought abroad, send it to me and I'll check whether it counts before you cancel anything. With less than a year, or a dental-only or consultations-only plan, the normal waiting periods apply: 3, 6 or 8 months depending on the service, and others for some complex treatments.

How much notice do I need to give to cancel my current policy?

Under Spanish law you can stop your policy renewing by telling your insurer in writing at least one month before the current period ends (article 22 of the Insurance Contract Act 50/1980), so if your policy runs to 31 December, your notice has to arrive before the end of November.

Your insurer, in turn, must tell you about any change to the contract, including the price, at least two months before renewal. The renewal date is on your policy schedule. My advice: ask for a Sanitas price as soon as your renewal letter arrives, and don't cancel the old policy until the new one is confirmed, so you don't end up with a gap in cover.

What documents do I need to switch to Sanitas?

To waive the waiting periods, Sanitas asks for two documents from your current insurer: your policy schedule (condiciones particulares), or your insurance card if it shows your start date, and proof of your latest premium payment, which you can provide with the application or afterwards.

If you already have them to hand, we check them together before the application goes in, so anything missing turns up early.

With Más Salud, yes. If you have or have had an illness, an operation or symptoms, the Sanitas medical team calls you to assess it. If you're 60 or over, Sanitas Único has no questionnaire.
