Dental insurance in Mallorca: what the public system covers, what Sanitas adds and where its dentists are

Dentist12 min readUpdated: 22 October 2026

In short

For adults, Spain's public health system covers urgent dental problems, extractions and minor oral surgery, but not fillings, hygiene appointments, braces or implants. Sanitas Dental Milenium costs from €12.20 a month per person (the 2026 premium Sanitas publishes for people who sign up on its website), plus €3.00 for each day you visit, with check-ups, scale and polish, X-rays and extractions included. A filling costs €59.50. I'll confirm your policy price before you sign.

I'm an exclusive agent for Sanitas, so this isn't a comparison of insurers. What you'll find here are three things that rarely sit on the same page: what Spanish law says about dental care in the public system, what Sanitas' two dental plans include and cost according to its own 2026 documents, and the dentists on its directory in Mallorca, town by town.

Is dental care free in Spain?

Only partly. For adults, the public system treats acute problems (infections, inflammation, knocks and mouth injuries), prescribes what you need, takes teeth out, does minor oral surgery and checks for pre-cancerous lesions, with a biopsy if needed. Fillings, root canals, braces, implants, dentures and cosmetic work aren't covered (Royal Decree 1030/2006, annex II, section 9).

That's Spain's common list of health services, and some groups get more. This is what the same section adds, as amended in 2024 and 2025:

WhoWhat they get on top of urgent care and extractions
Children up to and including 14Regular check-ups, fluoride and sealants, scale and polish, fillings in adult teeth, and treatment after knocks to the front teeth
Pregnant womenAn examination and, where indicated, scale and polish and fluoride; at least one visit, ideally in the first trimester
People over 14 with a disability of 33% or more that stops them caring for their teethThe same conservative treatment as children
People with head and neck cancerAn examination and preventive care before and during radiotherapy or chemotherapy

In the Balearic Islands, children also have the PADI, the children's dental programme (Decree 55/2016): from 6 to 15, a yearly check-up and general treatment, with public dentists or approved private ones. In 2025, 116,929 children were eligible and 41,851 used it, 35.8%, according to the IB-Salut report; 34,331 went to private practices. Mallorca had 221 private dentists in the programme.

If you're visiting with a UK GHIC or an EHIC, it gets you state healthcare that can't wait until you're home, not private treatment: the NHS says so for the GHIC, and the EU's Your Europe portal for the EHIC. The German DVKA's leaflet for holidays in Spain adds that public dental costs are only partly covered, for children up to 14, pregnant women, disabled people and some cancer patients. How residents get public healthcare, the S1 included, is in healthcare in Mallorca.

What dental insurance does Sanitas offer, and how much is it?

The two Sanitas dental plans covered here, which you can buy without its health insurance, are Dental Milenium, from €12.20 a month per person, and Dental Premium, from €19.90. Those are the prices with a co-payment of €3.00 for each day you visit; without it they're €14.25 and €22.90. Children under 6 go free.

These are the 2026 net premiums Sanitas publishes for people who sign up on its website, per person and valid until 31 December 2026. The page doesn't vary them by age or region. On top comes the Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros surcharge, 0.15% of the year's premium, an annual charge taken in the first month: on Milenium with co-payment that's €0.22 a year. I'll confirm the price of your policy before you sign.

You'll also see Dental Flex on Sanitas' website, a plan you build module by module. I haven't been able to read its terms, so I don't cover it here.

What's included, and what do you pay for?

Included: consultations and check-ups, scale and polish, fluoride, X-rays (panoramic and dental CT scans too), all extractions including wisdom teeth, emergency consultations, and children's dentistry for under-15s. With the co-payment version you pay €3.00 on each day you go. Root canals, implants, orthodontics and, on Milenium, fillings have a set price: the excess, or franquicia in Sanitas' documents.

The dentist doesn't set that price: it's on each plan's "Servicios y tarifas 2026" list on Sanitas' website. A few examples at 2026 prices, which are the same on Milenium and Premium except for fillings:

TreatmentWhat you pay in 2026
Filling€59.50 on Milenium; on Premium, two a year included, then €59.50
Rebuild (reconstrucción)€69.50 on Milenium; on Premium it counts towards the two a year, then €69.50
Root canal, single root€140.00
Root canal, two roots€180.00
Implant (the implant only, without the crown)€780.00

For braces, the plans include the X-ray study, the first replacement bracket and a mouthguard if the treatment is done at the same clinic; the treatment itself has its own excess, which depends on the appliance. Ask for the full list before you start: over a long treatment, the gap between one technique and another matters more than the monthly premium.

Should you buy dental cover on its own or a health plan that includes it?

If you're taking out Sanitas health insurance anyway, check whether it already includes the dentist. Más Salud includes more than 45 dental services and up to 21% off the rest, according to Sanitas, with a €3.00 dental co-payment on its co-payment options. A standalone dental plan makes sense when the public system covers everything else you need.

Residents, Sanitas' plan for foreign residents, also includes dental cover. Único, for people over 60, advertises "basic dental cover" without spelling it out, and its Balearic directory has no general dentistry or dental emergency sections, only oral and maxillofacial surgery. If that's your plan, ask me before you rely on it.

Here's how I'd decide. If your teeth are the only worry and the public system covers the rest, Dental Milenium costs far less than a full health plan: from €12.20 a month, against €73.36 for Más Salud with the medium co-payment at 35 in Mallorca. Premium costs €7.70 a month more than Milenium, €92.40 a year, and includes two fillings that would cost €119.00 on Milenium. If you need at least two fillings a year, Premium pays for itself; if you only go for a scale and polish, it doesn't.

There's a second reason for Premium that the price doesn't show: where you live. Milenium only works at Milenium clinics, and in Mallorca they're all in Palma. Premium adds the contracted dentists on Sanitas' directory, and the dental cover in Más Salud and Residents uses the directory in the table below, with dentists in ten towns outside Palma. Before you take out Premium, I'll check that the dentist near you is on your policy.

If you want full health insurance, Sanitas prices in Mallorca has Más Salud by age and family size, and Más Salud and Único, line by line shows what each one covers.

Where are Sanitas' dentists in Mallorca?

According to Sanitas' Balearic dental directory dated 17 October 2026, Palma has three Dental Milenium clinics (Aragó, Barón de Pinopar and Camino de la Vileta), a dental unit on Avinguda Gran i General Consell and two other practices. Outside Palma, the directory has dentists in ten towns, from Alcúdia to Llucmajor.

The same dentists appear in the Más Salud and Residents directory. The table lists every one in Mallorca with the name and address the directory gives, and whether it appears in its dental emergencies section ("odontoestomatología de urgencia"):

For maxillofacial X-rays, the directory adds Clínica Rotger, Policlínica Miramar and Ortoscan Illes Balears in Palma. The Gran i General Consell unit has the same address as the Centro Médico Sanitas Palma, the medical centre Sanitas opened in November 2025, which Sanitas says includes a dental unit.

With Dental Milenium, only the three Milenium clinics in Palma on this list work for you: in the Balearics, Sanitas' list of its own clinics has those three and one in Ibiza. The directory changes during the year, so check the practice in the Mi Sanitas app or on the sanitas.es search before you go. "P.P." in the directory means "previa petición", by appointment.

Looking for an English-speaking dentist? The directory doesn't say which languages each dentist speaks, so nobody can promise you one from it. Ask when you book.

What should you do about a dental emergency in Mallorca?

With a Sanitas dental plan, phone ahead to a practice the directory lists for dental emergencies: in Palma, the three Milenium clinics and the Gran i General Consell unit, Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 21:00, and Barón de Pinopar on Saturdays from 10:00 to 14:00 too. None appears in the directory as open 24 hours.

For the Palma clinics, the directory puts it like this: "urgencias solo en horario de consulta, llamar previamente al centro" (emergencies only during opening hours; call the clinic first). Outside Palma it lists dental emergencies in Alcúdia (Ciutadella Clínica Dental 5), Campos and Inca (Centros Médicos Quirónsalud), Manacor (Guitart Dental 2008, Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 13:00) and Port de Pollença. Without insurance, Sanitas charges €64.90 for an emergency consultation at a Milenium clinic, before any treatment.

If you only have public cover, pain, infection or a knock to the mouth are exactly the "acute problems" it covers: ask your health centre for an urgent appointment. Out of hours, IB-Salut's PAC centres handle urgent primary care around the clock. In a serious emergency, call 112 or 061.

Does it work if you only live in Mallorca part of the year?

Not if you're away for most of it. Both plans' general conditions say the cover ends if you move your residence abroad or don't live in Spain for at least six months a year. If you split the year between Mallorca and the UK or Germany, check that rule before you sign.

The rest is simple. There are no waiting periods: you can use the plan from its start date, and problems you already had are covered, because the general conditions include "todas las afecciones patológicas preexistentes" (all pre-existing conditions). It's a one-year contract that renews automatically, and Sanitas mentions a 12-month minimum. To stop it renewing, give written notice at least a month before the renewal date; Sanitas has to give you two. There's no upper age limit to join. Children under 6 go free on a parent's or guardian's policy, and under-14s can only join if their parent or guardian is insured too, unless agreed otherwise.

To choose between Milenium, Premium or a health plan that already includes the dentist, I need the ages of everyone on the policy and whether you already have health insurance. Send me a WhatsApp and I'll tell you which option fits and what it costs. If you're after full health insurance, the two-minute questionnaire shows the Sanitas options for your age.

Frequently asked questions

Partly. It includes the X-ray study, the first bracket replacement and a mouthguard if you're treated at the same clinic, but the orthodontic treatment itself has its own excess, which depends on the appliance. Spain's public system excludes orthodontics; in the Balearics, IB-Salut's children's programme (PADI) has an orthodontic unit for children with congenital facial malformations.

No. The product information documents for Dental Milenium and Dental Premium both say there's no maximum age to join. The price Sanitas publishes on its website, from €12.20 a month with co-payment on Milenium, doesn't vary by age either.

Children under 6 go free on a parent's or guardian's policy, and under-14s can only join if their parent or guardian is insured too, unless agreed otherwise. From 6 to 15, children in the Balearics also have the PADI, the public children's dental programme, with a yearly check-up and general treatment.

No. Dental Milenium only works at Sanitas' own Dental Milenium clinics, which in Mallorca are in Palma. Dental Premium adds the contracted dentists on Sanitas' directory. If you go to a dentist outside the network, Sanitas doesn't pay: both plans' general conditions say so.

Only in the public system, and only for care that can't wait until you're home. For adults, Spain's public dental care covers urgent problems, extractions and minor oral surgery. Neither card covers private dentists, so at a private practice you pay yourself unless you have private cover.
